TOKYO

GUNMA

NIIGATA
As one of Japan’s heartlands for rice cultivation, Niigata is perhaps best known for its cuisine and sake. Depending on the season, visitors can also feast their eyes on picture-perfect terraced rice fields, scenic beaches, or the snow-filled ski slopes of Echigo-Yuzawa. There is nothing like a dip in a hot spring after a day enjoying hiking, or the myriad other outdoor activities available.
TOCHIGI
Tochigi offers visitors the chance to experience the way Japan can seamlessly blend the beauty of nature with enduring spiritual traditions. Whether exploring the UNESCO-recognized temples and shrines of Nikko, hiking around Japan’s highest natural lake, Lake Chuzenji, or relaxing at the hot spring resorts of Kinugawa Onsen, Tochigi has something to offer all types of travelers.
IBARAKI
Ibaraki is best known for its flower-filled parks—especially Hitachi Seaside Park—and traditional gardens, which can be enjoyed throughout the year. It is also the location of the towering, twin-peaked Mt. Tsukuba, which is a mecca for hikers. The expansive coast offers lovely seaside views, and towns like Koga provide a tranquil, temple-filled atmosphere.
FUKUSHIMA
A gateway to the Tohoku region's wild expanse, Fukushima has bountiful stretches of wilderness that offer a variety of seasonal outdoor activities. Quaint villages like Ouchi-juku and cities like Aizuwakamatsu offer visitors the unique opportunity to get firsthand with the Japan of yesteryear and experience the rich cultural legacy of the samurai.
CHIBA
While Chiba is the first stop on many visitors’ Japan journey, there is so much more waiting beyond the runways of Narita International Airport! Its expansive coast is the perfect place to enjoy watersports and seaside views, and its inland mountains make for incredible hikes among greenery and serene temples.
SAITAMA
As its nearby northern neighbor, Saitama is easily accessible from Tokyo. The prefecture is characterized by its historic towns like Kawagoe, which maintain a retro atmosphere straight out of the Edo era. It is also remarkable for its mountainous peaks and lush river valleys, full of excellent hikes, outdoor activities, and seasonal flowers and foliage.
