Kumagaya is a quick 50-70 km from the heart of Tokyo. Since ancient times, it has thrived as a major stop on well-used travel routes; and its fertile land, plentiful water supplies, and green environment have created a fine balance of agriculture, commerce, and industry in the city. Kumagaya has many attractions, including the Shotendo Hall at Menuma Shodenzan Kangiin Temple (a designated national treasure), a fantastic cherry blossom walk along the Kumagai Sakura Tsutsumi embankment, the Kumagaya Uchiwa Matsuri festival, which is often referred to as the Kanto region's answer to Kyoto's Gion festival, and the historical Kumagaya Fireworks Festival. The city is also one of the hosts of the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
