Just 10 minutes by bus from Tobu Nikko Station, Tamozawa Imperial Villa was erected in 1899 as a retreat for the Imperial family. With an area of 4,471m², it is one of the largest wooden structures in Japan.

3. Lake Chuzenji

Take a bus from Tobu Nikko Station for about 40 minutes and get off at Chuzenji Onsen to reach Lake Chuzenji. Then, travel up the Irohazaka Winding Road to the top to reach a spot that commands a magnificent view of the lake.

4. Kegon Falls

It only takes 10 minutes by bus to get here from the Chuzenji Onsen bus stop. Water from Lake Chuzenji gives form to this superb 97 meter high waterfall. Take the elevator down to the observation deck to enjoy gazing at such an artful form created by the grandness that is Mother Nature.

5. Ryuzu Falls

Just 15 minutes on a bus from Lake Chuzenji, Ryuzu Falls flow for 210 meters over rocks created by lava from nearby Mt. Nantai’s eruption. Visitors can enjoy trekking on a walking trail along the river.

6. Kirifuri Highlands

Reachable in 30 minutes from Tobu Nikko Station by bus or car, this highland area 1,300-1,600m above sea level is a must-visit from mid-June through July for when the large community of broad dwarf day lily flowers bloom.

7. Getting to Kinugawa Hot Spring from Tochigi Station

The two-hour distance from central Tokyo makes this hot spring village a popular destination among Japanese visitors, too. The nearby theme parks of Edo Wonderland and Tobu World Square are also reasons why Kinugawa Hot Spring is a great place worth visiting.

8. Only 50 minutes on the Tobu Limited Express SPACIA train

Travel between Tochigi Station and Kinugawa Hot Spring on the Tobu Limited Express SPACIA takes 50 minutes each way.

9. Kinugawa Onsen Station

There are a few free footbaths around the station where visitors can unwind.

In the past, use of Kinugawa’s hot springs were reserved for visiting daimyo samurai and monks. Nowadays, many go to the hot springs as a day trip, and depending on the season, visitors may hop into yuzu lime-scented baths.

10. Rafting experience

Rafting on the Kinu River, which flows beside Kinugawa Hot Spring, is open to the public from spring through fall. The view of the autumn leaves from the valley is not to be missed!

11. Tobu World Square

Only 10 minutes by bus or 30 minutes on foot from Kinugawa Onsen Station. This theme park is dotted with 1:25 scale recreations of world-famous structures, including World Heritage sites. The human and plant models that accompany the structures are also exquisitely crafted. A trip to Tobu World Square will make you feel like you had taken a tour around the world!
