As any snow junkie in Japan might tell you, few locales on earth can compare to the powder slopes of the Land of the Rising Sun. And the Happo-One resort is up there with the very best.
The now-storied Happo-One resort found in Nagano’s Hakuba Valley came from humble beginnings in 1929 before undergoing major development in the post-war recovery years. Its crowning achievement might be hosting the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics alpine skiing downhill, giant super slalom and combined slalom events. But Happo-One’s popularity is not solely attributed to its Olympic pedigree.
Officially, the ski runs top out at an elevation of over 1,800 meters, with 13 separate courses—the longest of which slithers downslope for 8,000 uninterrupted meters. Covering 574 hectares of Japan’s Northern Alps are slopes for skiers and boarders of all abilities, from seasoned pros to first timers. There are also family-friendly facilities, ski lessons conducted by English-speaking guides available, well-connected transport networks, and access to backcountry skiing.
Even if you’re not a skier or boarder, there’s still plenty to keep you occupied in the village. From gorgeous scenery, quality cuisine, and picturesque outdoor hot springs, Hakuba Valley is truly a winter wonderland.
