Open year-round, Ashikaga Flower Park is a great place to see the beauty of Tochigi’s nature change with every season.

If you want to admire the seasonal beauty of Tochigi Prefecture in all its floral glory, then you can't miss Ashikaga Flower Park. This 100,000 square meter park is home to a variety of colorful and abundant flora like a scene ripped from the pages of a fairytale picture book.

Each month brings mood changes to Ashikaga Flower Park as the flowers on view follow the seasons. As visitors in April are treated to vibrant families of tulips, those coming in June can gaze at bulbous blue and purple hydrangeas. Later in the year, the area is carpeted in October’s amethyst sage while December is all about romantic light shows. However, the busiest month for the park is May when the Wisteria Festival comes into full bloom.

Showing off shades of pink, purple, white, and yellow, the arrival of wisteria is a popular and nationally loved event. From April to May, you'll find sprawling trellises covered in drooping wisteria branches heavy with the weight of flowers in full bloom, including an 80-meter tunnel of white wisterias, designated as a prefectural natural treasure. Still a well-kept secret in international travel circles, the park is popular with domestic tourists, attracting 1.5 million guests each year, many hoping to stroll under the two 150-year-old wisteria trees. While you're there, be sure to sample the park's wisteria ice cream. This pastel purple treat made with wisteria flowers is as delicious as it is pretty.
