Only an hour west of Tokyo lies the natural greenery and beauty of Mt. Takao and Okutama.

Within the sprawling metropolis of Tokyo, it’s easy to overlook the verdant mountains, hidden temples, and winding rivers nearby. The Tama area offers exceptional natural beauty and variety, all accessible from the city center. Mt. Takao has truly earned its must-see recommendation from the Michelin guide. The mountain region west of central Tokyo is as beautiful in the spring, with its “One Thousand Cherry Trees of Takao,” as it is in autumn, when the mountain maples turn vibrant shades of red and orange. While there are several hiking trails to the summit, there’s also a cable car for those requiring assistance getting to the top or those who want a scenic aerial view. Pack a picnic for a great date on the summit, or check out some of the quaint stalls and shops also offering delicious local delicacies.

A little further west is Okutama, another hiking paradise with routes that slink along the Tama River, around Okutama Lake, and up Mt. Kumotori, the highest point in Tokyo at 2,017 meters. Other notable mountains include Mt. Mitake, known for the colorful Musashi-Mitake Shrine, and Mt. Hinode, with sweeping views that stretch as far as Tokyo SkyTree on a clear day.

Adventure lovers can go rafting, kayaking, and even canyoning along the Tama River, or take a dip while surrounded by lush greenery. The perfect way to unwind is to soak in one of the many onsen or try some of the local sake. The clear, pure water was chosen as the site of six of Tokyo’s breweries, some even offering tours of the facilities.
